Save, share and take RigTonight into the field: rigs, links, night mode and offline use

RigTonight has no accounts. Everything you build stays in your browser, and a link carries a rig to anyone else. This tutorial covers keeping rigs, sharing them, and using the app outside in the dark.

Save your rigs

Type a name in Name this rig and click Save rig. Save as many as you like: your refractor and your Newtonian, a travel rig, the rig you're thinking of buying.

Open My rigs to switch between them. The current rig shows unsaved changes when you've swapped a part since saving. Click Save to update it, or Save as new to keep both versions. You can also Rename or delete a rig from the list.

Saved rigs live in this browser on this device. Clearing your browser data removes them, and they don't sync to your phone. A share link is the easiest way to move a rig between devices.

Share a rig

The Share this rig card makes a link that contains your exact parts, filters and seeing. Copy it, or send it straight to Reddit, WhatsApp, X, Facebook or email. Anyone with the link sees the same parts and the same checks. It's a quick way to ask a forum "will this work?" and let people see the answer.

When someone opens your link, RigTonight shows You're viewing a shared rig. Their own rig is safe. They can Save to My rigs, Use as my rig, or go Back to my rig.

Every example rig in these guides works the same way: Open this rig in the builder loads it without touching yours.

Night mode

The Night mode button in the header turns the whole app red. Red light disturbs your dark-adapted eyes far less than white or blue, so you can check the forecast or a target's altitude at the scope without losing your night vision. Turn your screen brightness down too. RigTonight remembers the setting.

Install it and use it offline

RigTonight is an installable web app. Once a page has loaded, the app keeps working without a signal, which is what you want at a dark site.

  • iPhone and iPad (Safari): tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
  • Android (Chrome): open the menu, then Install app or Add to Home screen.
  • Desktop (Chrome or Edge): click the install icon in the address bar.

Offline, your rigs, the checks, the target catalog, darkness, moon times and target altitudes all still work, because they're worked out on your device. The cloud forecast and the sky preview need a connection. Check the forecast before you leave home, and note the best window.

Your privacy

Your rigs, saved site and settings never leave your browser. The weather service sees your location rounded to about 1 km, and nothing else. The privacy policy has the details.

That's the last tutorial. If something in the app still isn't clear, email us and we'll add it.
